Choosing Glassware for Laser Engraving - Shapes and Styles.
Not all glassware is suitable for laser engraving. The shape, surface finish, and overall design of the item play a big part in determining whether a clean, professional result can be achieved.
Symmetrical Shapes Work Best
Most glasses, jugs, and decanters are engraved using a rotary attachment. This allows the item to rotate while the laser engraves the design.
For this process to work properly, the item needs to rotate smoothly and evenly. Glassware with a symmetrical shape is usually ideal. Unusual, uneven, or irregular shapes often cannot be engraved accurately.
Square whisky glasses and square decanters can usually be engraved without rotation if they have a suitable flat engraving area.
Smooth Glass Produces the Best Results
The engraving area should be smooth and free from decorative features.
Avoid glassware with:
Embossing
Raised logos
Textured surfaces
Decorative patterns
Heavy moulding
These features can interfere with the laser and prevent the design from engraving clearly. In some cases, engraving may not be possible at all.
A smooth section of glass will always provide the best result.
How Flat Does the Engraving Area Need to Be?
For glasses, at least one side should be reasonably straight.
A slight curve is usually acceptable, but the surface should not vary by more than approximately 5mm across the engraving area when a ruler is placed against it.
The same guideline applies to jugs and decanters.
An easy way to visualise this is to imagine holding a pen against the side of the glass while the glass rotates. The surface should remain in contact with the pen throughout the rotation while you move it along it’s axis. A small gap of up to around 3-4mm is generally acceptable. Anything more can prevent the laser from maintaining proper focus and tracking.
Special Considerations for Jugs and Decanters
Jugs and decanters can be more challenging than standard drinkware.
Depending on the shape, they are either:
Mounted between centres on the rotary attachment
Held using a finger-clamping rotary attachment
In both cases, the item must rotate evenly and remain centred throughout the engraving process.
Many decorative jugs and decanters are unsuitable because they:
Have uneven shapes
Feature heavy curves
Include decorative moulding
Are not centred properly for rotary engraving
In reality, there are often more unsuitable jugs and decanters on the market than suitable ones.
Not Sure What to Buy?
If you’re planning to purchase glassware specifically for engraving, I would suggest browsing online first and to send through a few examples before ordering / purchasing.
I can quickly check whether a particular glass, jug, or decanter is suitable for engraving and help you avoid purchasing an item that may not produce a good result.
Hope this helps with your glass selection, Nate.
